Overview

MK-5720 is a long-acting injectable small molecule antipsychotic drug candidate under development by Merck Sharp & Dohme (Merck) for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is administered via intramuscular injection and has completed Phase I clinical trials in the United States for this indication. The precise mechanism of action has not been fully defined in public sources; however, at least one source suggests it may act as a phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) inhibitor—a novel mechanism among antipsychotics—though this requires further confirmation from primary literature or regulatory filings. As of April 2024, it remains an investigational new molecular entity with no orphan drug status and no FDA designations.
