MKC-1704 is a preclinical small molecule histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor originally discovered and developed by Miikana Therapeutics for the treatment of various neoplasms. As an HDAC inhibitor, the compound targets enzymes responsible for removing acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones, a process that typically leads to chromatin condensation and transcriptional silencing of genes. By inhibiting these enzymes, MKC-1704 promotes the expression of genes associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, thereby inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Following the acquisition of Miikana Therapeutics by EntreMed in early 2006, MKC-1704 was integrated into EntreMed's oncology pipeline. At the time of the transition, the drug candidate was undergoing IND-enabling studies to support its entry into clinical trials.
