Overview

MLC601, also known as NeuroAiD or NeuroAiDTM, is a traditional Chinese medicine-based combination product originally developed to support functional recovery after stroke. It consists of nine herbal components (Radix astragali, Radix salviae miltiorrhizae, Radix paeoniae rubra, Rhizoma chuanxiong, Radix angelicae sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius [safflower], Prunus persica [peach], Radix polygalae [thinleaf milkwort root], and Rhizoma acori tatarinowii [grassleaf sweet flag rhizome]) and five animal-derived components (Hirudo medicinalis [leech], Eupolyphaga seu steleophaga [beetle], Calculus bovis artifactus [artificial cow bezoar], Buthus martensii [scorpion], Cornu saigae tataricae [antelope horn]). The formulation was first registered in China in 2001 and marketed primarily for post-stroke recovery. Preclinical studies suggest neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects through mechanisms such as stimulation of microcirculation, increased cerebral blood flow velocity, promotion of neurogenesis via brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cell proliferation, neurite outgrowth, and activation of K ATP channels. Clinical trials have shown mixed results regarding efficacy for acute ischemic stroke; some studies report improved functional outcomes while others show no significant benefit over placebo at 3 months. MLC601 has also been studied for cognitive enhancement in Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury[1][2][5][6].
