MLC901 (NeuroAiD II) is a traditional Chinese medicine-based herbal formulation composed of nine plant ingredients. It is developed as a neurorestorative and neuroprotective agent, primarily for use in neurological recovery following stroke and traumatic brain injury. The mechanism of action includes enhancement of endogenous neuroprotection, promotion of neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, and activation of KATP channels which confer protection against brain ischemia. MLC901 has demonstrated both neuroprotective and regenerative effects in preclinical models as well as clinical studies for conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), cognitive impairment after TBI, hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, dementia including Alzheimer's disease, and cognitive dysfunction[3][4][6][8]. Clinical trials have shown improvements in some functional outcomes and cognitive domains post-TBI; however, results are mixed regarding its efficacy compared to placebo for post-stroke recovery[4][9][10]. Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea or diarrhea; serious adverse events are rare but have been reported.
