MMS019 is an investigational intranasal antiviral barrier spray being developed by Virpax Pharmaceuticals using Nanomerics’ high-density “molecular masking” technology to prevent respiratory viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2 and seasonal influenza.[4][1][12] The dry powder formulation contains quaternary ammonium palmitoyl glycol chitosan (GCPQ), a self-assembling, mucoadhesive, trimethylammonium chitosan polymer that forms nanoparticles clustered into microparticles for nasal delivery, where they are designed to bind to nasal epithelial surfaces and electrostatically interact with viral spike proteins to block viral binding and entry into epithelial cells in the nasal cavity and upper respiratory tract.[2][4] MMS019 is intended as a non-vaccine prophylactic “molecular mask” to reduce viral transmission and provide up to 24-hour local protection, particularly as an adjunct to personal protective equipment for healthcare workers and other high-risk populations.[1][4][10] Preclinical studies, including ex vivo airway models and animal infection models, have demonstrated inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 and reductions in nasal and brain viral load, while GLP toxicology studies in rats and dogs have characterized local nasal tolerability and helped establish dosing for clinical development.[2][3][10][12]
