MMT is a macromolecular methylene blue-based lymphatic tracer developed by Shenyang Pharmaceutical University. It is specifically designed for use in thyroid cancer surgery to facilitate lymphatic mapping and the identification of sentinel lymph nodes. By increasing the molecular weight of methylene blue (creating a macromolecular form), the tracer remains localized within the lymphatic system for a longer duration and diffuses less into surrounding tissues compared to standard methylene blue. This improved retention allows for clearer visualization of lymphatic drainage patterns, aiding surgeons in performing more precise central neck lymph node dissections and total thyroidectomies while helping to preserve critical structures like the parathyroid glands.
