Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MMT2.93 is a thiophene derivative small molecule antimicrobial candidate under preclinical development for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacterial infections, specifically those caused by *Acinetobacter baumannii* and *Escherichia coli*. Developed by the Universidad Pablo de Olavide and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), MMT2.93 targets bacterial outer membrane proteins (OMPs), specifically Omp33 in *A. baumannii* and OmpC in *E. coli*. Binding to these targets disrupts cell wall and membrane integrity, leading to structural changes similar to those caused by membrane-targeting antibiotics. MMT2.93 exhibits low in vivo toxicity and demonstrates significant synergistic bactericidal activity when combined with colistin, effectively restoring colistin sensitivity in resistant strains.
