Overview

MN rgp160 is a recombinant HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein 160 vaccine derived from the MN strain of HIV-1, which was historically representative of many HIV-1 isolates in the United States. Developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in collaboration with Immuno-AG, the vaccine is produced using a baculovirus expression system in insect cells. It is designed to function as both a preventive and therapeutic vaccine by inducing humoral immune responses, including neutralizing antibodies against the V3 loop, and cellular immune responses such as helper T-cell memory. Clinical evaluation in Phase I and II trials demonstrated that the vaccine, typically formulated with an alum adjuvant, was safe and well-tolerated in both healthy volunteers and HIV-infected individuals, though its ability to elicit high levels of broadly neutralizing antibodies was limited.
