moclobemide

Moclobemide is a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA), classified as a selective and reversible MAOI. It increases the levels of norepinephrine (noradrenaline), dopamine, and especially serotonin in neuronal cells and synaptic vesicles by inhibiting their breakdown. This results in increased stimulation of monoamine receptors. Moclobemide is used primarily for the treatment of major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Unlike traditional irreversible MAOIs, it does not require dietary restrictions related to tyramine-containing foods due to its reversibility and selectivity for MAO-A. It has a favorable side effect profile compared to tricyclic antidepressants and other older antidepressants, with low risk for food or drug interactions except with other serotonergic agents such as SSRIs or pethidine[1]. Moclobemide was first developed in Switzerland in 1972 and approved for use in Sweden in 1989; it is now available in over 50 countries but not marketed in the United States[1].
