Overview

Modified Baitouweng decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation primarily based on the classic Baitouweng decoction, which consists of four main herbs: Pulsatilla chinensis, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron chinense, and Fraxinus chinensis (or Fraxinus rhynchophylla)[7]. "Modified" indicates that the formulation may include additions or subtractions of herbs to tailor its effects for specific clinical indications. The decoction is mainly used for the treatment of gut-related disorders, including radiation enteritis and ulcerative colitis. Mechanistically, mBTWD is thought to exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immune-modulatory effects—regulating intestinal immune function, rebalancing Th17/Treg cells, modulating the intestinal microbiota, enhancing intestinal barrier integrity, and inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, possibly via pathways such as IL-6/STAT3 and FXR/TGR5 signaling[7].
