Overview
Modified Bushen Yiqi granules (also known as Jia Wei Bushen Yiqi granules) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University. It is formulated with five key herbal ingredients: Astragalus (Huangqi), Epimedium, Rehmannia (Shengdi), Red Peony Root (Chishao), and Scutellaria (Huangqin). The formula is designed to treat acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and stable COPD, particularly in patients presenting with a TCM pattern of lung and kidney qi deficiency with stasis-heat. Modified Bushen Yiqi granules work by mitigating pulmonary inflammation and airway remodeling. Preclinical studies suggest that the formula inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis via downregulation of the CXCL1/CXCL5/CXCL8-CXCR2 axis, suppresses the IL-17 signaling pathway (including IL-17A and IL-17F), and reduces downstream inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and COX-2.
