Overview

Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is a dietary supplement derived from the soluble fiber of citrus fruit peels. It is a low-molecular-weight, water-soluble polysaccharide that has been chemically altered to enhance absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. MCP acts primarily as an inhibitor of galectin-3, a protein involved in cancer metastasis, fibrosis, and inflammation. Preclinical and early clinical studies suggest that MCP may have antioxidant, hypocholesterolemic, immunostimulatory, metal chelating (detoxification), anti-metastatic, antifibrotic, and anti-inflammatory activities. While laboratory research indicates potential benefits for cancer (notably prostate cancer), cardiovascular disease, fibrotic diseases (such as kidney and liver fibrosis), immune modulation, and heavy metal detoxification, robust clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for these indications remains limited[1][4][5][6][8]. MCP is not approved as a pharmaceutical drug for any indication but is marketed as an alternative or complementary therapy.
