Overview
Modified Dahuang Huanglian Xiexin Mouthwash is a Chinese herbal formulation developed by Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It is derived from the classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula Dahuang Huanglian Xiexin Decoction, specifically modified to enhance its therapeutic properties for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis (RTOM). The active ingredients include extracts from *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), and *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin). These botanical components are rich in bioactive compounds such as berberine, baicalin, and emodin, which provide potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. The mouthwash is intended to mitigate mucosal damage caused by ionizing radiation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress pathways in the oral cavity.
