Modified extract of Olea europaea pollen is a type of allergen immunotherapy used to treat allergic reactions, such as allergic rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, and asthma, caused by olive tree pollen. The extract is derived from the pollen of the Olea europaea tree and is chemically modified to reduce its allergenicity while preserving its ability to induce an immune response. One method of modification involves depigmentation and polymerization with glutaraldehyde. This process makes the treatment safer by lowering the risk of severe allergic reactions. Administered through subcutaneous injections in gradually increasing doses (a method known as subcutaneous cluster-immunotherapy), the treatment works by exposing the immune system to controlled amounts of the allergen. This desensitization process helps the body build tolerance to olive pollen, leading to a reduction in allergy symptoms, a decreased need for medication, and an increase in allergen-specific IgG antibodies which are thought to block the allergic response.
