Overview
Modified Huang-Lian-Jie-Du Decoction (MHLJDD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula derived from the classical Huang-Lian-Jie-Du Decoction (HLJDD). The original HLJDD consists of four herbs: Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbo), and Fructus Gardeniae (Zhizi). In the modified version, Fructus Gardeniae has been replaced with Dictamni cortex due to the remarkable liver and kidney toxicities associated with Gardeniae fructus. MHLJDD has demonstrated various therapeutic effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-endotoxic, and immunomodulatory activities. It has been studied for its efficacy in treating conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, sepsis, and oral diseases caused by "Shanghuo" (excessive internal heat). Research has shown that MHLJDD may regulate energy metabolism and synaptic plasticity, potentially through NMDA receptor-mediated glutamatergic transmission and adenosine/ATPase/AMPK cascade.
