Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Modified Huopo Xialing Decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed and researched by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Jinan University. It is a modification of the classic Huopo Xialing Decoction, traditionally used to treat "damp-heat" (Shi-Re) syndromes, which in modern clinical terms often correspond to viral infections accompanied by significant inflammatory responses. The modified version is specifically indicated for upper respiratory tract viral infections, including influenza (such as H1N1). Its therapeutic effect is attributed to a multi-target approach that includes direct antiviral activity and the modulation of the host's immune response. Pharmacological studies indicate that it can suppress the "cytokine storm" by reducing levels of pro-inflammatory mediators like IL-6 and TNF-alpha, and it may interfere with viral entry or replication. The decoction typically comprises a complex mixture of herbs including *Agastache rugosa*, *Magnolia officinalis*, *Pinellia ternata*, and *Poria cocos*, often supplemented with additional heat-clearing herbs in the modified version.
