Overview

Ribohyal (HAr 0.1%) is a novel ophthalmic solution composed of modified sodium hyaluronate covalently conjugated to riboflavin (vitamin B2). Developed by researchers at the University of Naples 'Federico II' and the Corneal Transplant Center at Pellegrini Hospital, it is administered as lubricant eye drops for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED). The modified hyaluronic acid component provides water-retaining and ocular surface hydration properties, while the riboflavin conjugation is designed to improve tear film stability and alleviate symptoms such as photophobia. Clinical studies, including a prospective randomized trial (NCT06122428), have demonstrated that Ribohyal produces faster and more significant improvements in Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores and tear film parameters compared to standard 0.1% hyaluronic acid eye drops. It has received market authorization in Europe as a medical device.
