Modified ovine submaxillary gland mucin refers to a chemically or enzymatically altered form of the native glycoprotein mucin derived from the submaxillary glands of sheep (ovine). The most common modification is desialylation, resulting in dOSM, which removes sialic acid residues and alters immunogenic properties. Ovine submaxillary gland mucins are large, heavily glycosylated proteins rich in O-linked oligosaccharides. They have been studied as immunogens in cancer vaccine research due to their expression of tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens such as sialyl-Tn (sTn) and Tn antigens. Modified forms have been used experimentally to stimulate immune responses against carcinoma cells by presenting these antigens more effectively. Mechanistically, they act primarily as antigen sources for immune activation rather than through direct receptor targeting[6][8].
