Overview
Modified Peony and Licorice Granules is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation based on the classic Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (Peony and Licorice Decoction). Developed by Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, it is specifically investigated for the treatment of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia and its associated symptoms (such as amenorrhea and galactorrhea) in female patients with schizophrenia. The formula typically combines *Paeonia lactiflora* (peony) and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (licorice), which contain active compounds like paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizic acid. The modification often includes additional herbs such as *Hordei Fructus Germinatus* (malt) to enhance the prolactin-lowering effect. Its mechanism of action is thought to involve the modulation of dopamine D2 receptors and the direct inhibition of prolactin release from the anterior pituitary gland.
