Overview

The modified poliovirus vaccine is a genetically engineered poliovirus therapy developed at Duke Cancer Institute. It is designed to be infused directly into brain tumors via a surgically implanted catheter. The modified virus preferentially targets tumor cells, initiating a localized immune response. This therapy has shown significantly improved long-term survival for patients with recurrent glioblastoma in a phase 1 clinical trial. It received "breakthrough therapy designation" from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2016.
