Overview

Modified Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (mQJDHW) is a multi-herbal traditional Chinese medicine formulation being investigated by the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a liver-targeted therapy for diabetic macular edema (DME). Unlike conventional treatments that focus on local vascular dysfunction in the eye, mQJDHW addresses systemic inflammation and hepatic metabolic dysfunction, which are implicated in the progression of diabetic retinopathy. The formulation consists of twelve components, including *Tribulus terrestris*, *Paeonia lactiflora*, and *Lycium chinensis*. It has been shown to reduce oxidative stress in both the liver and the retina, while providing anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial, often in combination with the bile acid tauroursodeoxycholate (TUDCA).
