Overview

Modified Qing-Ying Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula derived from the classical prescription Qing-Ying Decoction (QYD), which itself is used to clear heat from the nutritive level, cool the blood, and resolve toxicity. The "modified" version refers to adjustments in composition or dosage tailored for specific clinical indications. It is typically composed of multiple herbs such as Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Scrophularia ningpoensis (Xuan Shen), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Men Dong), Lonicera japonica (Jin Yin Hua), Forsythia suspensa (Lian Qiao), Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian), Salvia miltiorrhizae (Dan Shen) and others; modifications may include additional herbs or altered proportions depending on disease presentation[6]. Mechanistically, it exerts anti-inflammatory effects by modulating immune responses—such as increasing CD3+ and CD4+ T cells while decreasing CD8+ T cells—and suppresses inflammatory mediators through pathways like NF-κB/NLRP3/caspase-1[2][8]. It has been studied for use in conditions including atopic dermatitis in children[3], endotoxemia in cirrhosis due to hepatitis B[1], plaque psoriasis as an adjunct to biologics[2], and renal hematuria when combined with other formulas[7]. Its primary actions are attributed to multi-target modulation of inflammation, immune regulation, cooling blood heat/toxicity per TCM theory, and organ protection.
