Overview
Modified Suanzaoren decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formula (TCM) being investigated by Central South University for the treatment of chronic insomnia disorder, particularly in patients with Yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire syndrome. The formula is a modification of the classic Suanzaoren Tang, which typically includes *Semen Ziziphi Spinosae* (Suanzaoren), *Poria cocos* (Fuling), *Rhizoma Chuanxiong* (Chuanxiong), *Anemarrhena asphodeloides* (Zhimu), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gancao). It functions by nourishing the heart and liver blood while clearing heat and calming the spirit. Pharmacologically, its active constituents, such as jujubosides and flavonoids from Suanzaoren, are thought to interact with the GABAergic system to exert sedative and hypnotic effects. The clinical study aims to compare its efficacy and impact on cognitive function and brain imaging against the sedative-hypnotic drug eszopiclone.
