Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Modified Vaccinia Ankara–Bavaria Nordic (MVA-BN) is a live, non-replicating, third-generation smallpox and mpox vaccine developed by Bavarian Nordic. It is based on the highly attenuated Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) virus, which has lost the ability to replicate efficiently in mammalian cells. This replication deficiency provides a significantly improved safety profile compared to traditional replicating smallpox vaccines (such as ACAM2000), making it suitable for use in immunocompromised individuals and patients with atopic dermatitis. MVA-BN is approved under the brand names Jynneos in the United States, Imvanex in Europe, and Imvamune in Canada for active immunization against smallpox, mpox, and disease caused by the vaccinia virus.
