Overview

Modified Wenjing decoction is a variant of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula "Wenjing decoction" (Wen Jing Tang), which is historically used to warm the uterus and vessels, nourish blood, invigorate blood circulation, dispel cold and stasis, and regulate menstruation. The classic formula contains 12 herbs including Evodia fruit (Wu Zhu Yu), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong), Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi), Fresh ginger rhizome (Sheng Jiang), Pinellia ternata (Ban Xia), Licorice root (Gan Cao), Donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao), Moutan cortex (Mu Dan Pi), Red peony root (Chi Shao or Bai Shao depending on source), Codonopsis root or Ginseng root, and Ophiopogon tuber. Modified versions may adjust these ingredients based on individual patient needs or specific clinical indications. The mechanism of action involves improving blood circulation, eliminating stasis, warming meridians to dispel cold, nourishing blood and yin, supporting digestive function via spleen tonification, and modulating immune/inflammatory pathways. Pharmacological studies suggest that active components in the formula may target inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukins like IL-10 and IL-1β; they also affect prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 activity among other targets[3]. Clinically it has been studied for primary dysmenorrhea due to cold coagulation/blood stasis[1], ovulatory disorder infertility[2], recurrent spontaneous abortion[3], menstrual irregularities[5][6][7], menopausal syndrome[5], among other gynecological conditions.
