Overview

Modified Xiao-Feng Powder (mXFP) is an investigational traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed by Professor Lin Zhixiu at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for the treatment of chronic urticaria. It is a refined version of the classic Xiao-Feng Powder (Wind-Dispersing Powder), a formula first documented in the 1617 TCM text *Orthodox Lineage of External Medicine* (Wai Ke Zheng Zong). The modification is tailored to enhance efficacy and safety for modern patients suffering from chronic spontaneous urticaria. In clinical trials, such as NCT04967092, mXFP is administered as oral granules in combination with second-generation antihistamines (e.g., bilastine) to evaluate its ability to reduce the Urticaria Activity Score (UAS7) and improve quality of life compared to antihistamine monotherapy. The formula traditionally acts by dispersing wind, clearing heat, and cooling the blood to address the underlying TCM diagnosis of 'Yin Zhen'.
