MOG peptide refers to a class of synthetic peptides derived from Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein (MOG), a transmembrane protein expressed on the surface of oligodendrocytes and myelin sheaths in the central nervous system. These peptides, particularly the MOG35-55 fragment, are extensively used in research to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the primary animal model for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Beyond their use as research reagents, MOG peptides are being investigated as antigen-specific immunotherapies (tolerogenic vaccines). Their mechanism involves binding to MHC class II molecules and presenting specific epitopes to MOG-reactive T cells to induce immune tolerance, anergy, or the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs). This approach aims to halt the autoimmune destruction of myelin without the broad immunosuppression associated with conventional MS therapies. Conjugated forms, such as mannan-MOG35-55 (OM-MOG), have entered early-stage clinical trials.
