Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mogroside (specifically referring to the family of mogrosides, with mogroside V being the most prominent) is a natural cucurbitane-type tetracyclic triterpenoid glycoside extracted from the fruit of *Siraitia grosvenorii* (monk fruit or Luo Han Guo). Primarily known as a high-intensity, non-caloric sweetener, mogroside is also being developed as a therapeutic agent and dietary supplement due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic properties. It is currently under clinical investigation by Guangxi Normal University for the treatment of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and has been studied in Phase II trials for chronic hepatitis C. Mogroside exerts its therapeutic effects through multiple pathways, including the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Nrf2 antioxidant pathways, inhibition of the NF-κB inflammatory cascade, and direct agonism of the beta-2 adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). It also acts as an agonist of the sweet taste receptors TAS1R2/TAS1R3 and inhibits maltase-glucoamylase to lower blood glucose levels.
