Overview

Molecular sieve hemostatic material refers to a class of topical agents used to control bleeding by promoting rapid blood clotting at the site of injury. The primary active component is typically a synthetic zeolite or modified calcium-exchanged type A (Ca-A) molecular sieve, which is a microporous aluminosilicate mineral engineered for high water absorption capacity. When applied directly to wounds, these materials act as selective adsorbents—rapidly absorbing water from blood while leaving behind concentrated platelets and coagulation factors. This dehydration effect accelerates the natural clotting cascade and enhances platelet aggregation. Some formulations also release calcium ions into the wound, further stimulating coagulation pathways[3][6][7]. These products are designed for use in trauma care—including military first aid kits and emergency response—where fast-acting control of moderate to severe bleeding is critical[3][5]. They are available as powders or incorporated into dressings/bandages that retain the particulate material in contact with blood[5]. While highly effective for rapid hemorrhage control, early zeolite-based products could cause exothermic reactions; newer generations have been optimized to reduce heat generation and improve biocompatibility[7].
