Molidustat is a small molecule drug that acts as a competitive and reversible inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH). By inhibiting HIF-PH, molidustat stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), leading to increased endogenous production of erythropoietin (EPO) and subsequent stimulation of erythropoiesis (red blood cell production). It is primarily developed for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, both in humans and veterinary medicine. In cats, it is conditionally approved by the FDA under the brand name Varenzin-CA1 for controlling nonregenerative anemia due to chronic kidney disease. Molidustat has also been investigated in clinical trials for renal anemia in non-dialysis human subjects[3][4][5][6][7].
