molindone

Molindone is a typical antipsychotic medication primarily used for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is an indole derivative, structurally distinct from other antipsychotics such as phenothiazines and butyrophenones. Molindone acts mainly as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptor in the brain, reducing dopamine activity and thereby alleviating symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations and delusions. In vitro studies also show antagonism at serotonin 5-HT2B receptor. The drug was first described in 1966, introduced for medical use in 1974, and remains marketed only in the United States. While its primary indication has been schizophrenia, it has also been investigated for aggression associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents[1][3][7][8].
