Overview

Molnupiravir is an orally bioavailable ribonucleoside analog developed for the treatment of COVID-19. Originally discovered at Emory University and developed by Ridgeback Biotherapeutics in collaboration with Merck, the drug acts as a prodrug of the nucleoside analog N4-hydroxycytidine. It exerts its antiviral effect by being incorporated into viral RNA by the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, leading to an accumulation of mutations in the viral genome (a process known as viral error catastrophe), which eventually renders the virus non-functional. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at high risk for progression to severe disease.
