Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral and chemical element (atomic number 42, symbol Mo) required for human health. It acts as a cofactor in several key enzymes, including sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and mitochondrial amidoxime reducing component (mARC), which are involved in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids, purines, pyrimidines, drugs, and toxins. Molybdenum deficiency is extremely rare but can be treated or prevented with supplementation.
