Overview

Mometasone furoate + formoterol fumarate is a fixed-dose inhaled combination of mometasone furoate, an inhaled corticosteroid, and formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist. Mometasone activates the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress airway inflammation, while formoterol activates beta2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle to provide rapid, sustained bronchodilation. It is supplied as a pressurized metered-dose inhalation aerosol and marketed for maintenance treatment of asthma, including in patients aged 5 years and older in the United States. Phase III COPD studies evaluated 200/10 micrograms and 400/10 micrograms twice daily, demonstrating improved lung function and reductions in exacerbations versus placebo or individual components, but the combination is not approved in the United States for COPD.
