Overview

Momordica charantia fruit is the edible fruit of a climbing vine native to Asia and other tropical regions. Commonly known as bitter melon or karela among many other names worldwide[3][8], it has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The primary bioactive compounds include phenolic compounds (such as flavonoids and triterpenoids), insulin-like peptides (notably polypeptide-p), and charantin[8]. These constituents are believed to contribute to its hypoglycemic effects by acting similarly to insulin and reducing blood sugar levels[1][4][5]. Bitter melon has also demonstrated antioxidant properties and potential anti-inflammatory activity. Other suggested uses include management of dyslipidemia (abnormal blood fat levels), obesity/weight loss support[8], non-alcoholic fatty liver disease prevention[8], cancer prevention (based on preclinical data)[5], antimicrobial effects[8], fever reduction[5][8], gastrointestinal upset relief[3][8], skin conditions such as psoriasis or burns treatment[3][8], fertility enhancement in folk medicine,[5] and pain relief during menstruation.[3] However clinical evidence supporting most uses is limited; the strongest data exist for its modest glucose-lowering effect in type 2 diabetes—though results are inconsistent across studies and not sufficient for routine therapeutic recommendation without medical supervision.[4] Momordica charantia fruit is available fresh or dried for culinary use or processed into extracts sold over-the-counter as dietary supplements.[2]
