MON002 is an autologous cell therapy consisting of monocytes that are harvested from the patient, cultured *in vitro*, and then re-infused intravenously. Developed by researchers at University College London (UCL), the therapy is specifically designed to treat pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease, including cases following COVID-19 infection. The mechanism of action involves the recruitment of anti-fibrotic monocytes and macrophages to the lungs, where they facilitate the clearance of partially degraded collagen fragments, particularly fibrillary-type collagen, from the extracellular matrix. This process aims to reduce lung scarring and improve respiratory function. MON002 is currently being evaluated in the Phase I/II MONACO clinical trial.
