Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Monacolin K + Berberine is a fixed-dose combination product developed by Mogon Pharmaceuticals for the management of hypercholesterolemia. It combines monacolin K, a naturally occurring HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor found in red yeast rice that is chemically identical to lovastatin, with berberine, a plant-derived alkaloid. Monacolin K reduces endogenous cholesterol production by inhibiting the rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway. Berberine complements this action by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and upregulating the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLR) on hepatocytes, which enhances the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. Additionally, berberine has been shown to inhibit PCSK9, further stabilizing LDLR levels. The product is formulated as a controlled-release oral tablet to optimize the lipid-lowering and metabolic benefits of both natural compounds, while also providing potential antidiabetic activity.
