Overview

Monascus purpureus NTU 568 fermented rice extract is an ethanol or water/ethanol extract of rice fermented by the fungal strain Monascus purpureus NTU 568. It is rich in active secondary metabolites including monascin and ankaflavin but is specifically formulated to contain no statin (no monacolin K), distinguishing it from traditional red yeast rice extracts. It is used primarily as a dietary supplement for blood lipid and cholesterol modulation, glycemic control, blood pressure management, and as a putative neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory agent. Mechanistically, it acts through hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative pathways; monascin and ankaflavin modulate lipid metabolism by reducing LDL cholesterol and raising HDL cholesterol. It also exhibits neuroprotective effects mediated by repressing ROS-generating NOX enzymes and inflammatory cytokines. It is backed by clinical studies showing cholesterol/blood sugar reduction and is recognized as a new dietary ingredient by the US FDA.
