Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Monistat-1** is an over-the-counter, single-dose vaginal imidazole-antifungal product line for **vulvovaginal candidiasis**. The primary Monistat 1 Combination Pack contains a 1,200 mg miconazole nitrate vaginal Ovule insert plus 2% miconazole nitrate external vulvar cream; the insert treats the infection and the cream relieves associated external itching and irritation. Miconazole inhibits fungal lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, suppressing ergosterol synthesis and compromising fungal cell-membrane integrity. The Monistat 1 name is not fully composition-specific: a Monistat 1 prefilled ointment variant contains tioconazole 6.5% rather than miconazole, although both active ingredients are imidazole antifungals with the same core ergosterol-biosynthesis mechanism. The current Monistat brand is owned by Prestige Consumer Healthcare. ([dailymed.nlm.nih.gov](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=97ff1c90-c250-4921-81af-6a56cc9cc7d2))
