Overview

Monoamine oxidase A short hairpin RNA (shMAOA) is an RNA interference (RNAi) agent designed to specifically silence the expression of the *MAOA* gene. Monoamine oxidase A is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic amines and has been increasingly recognized for its role in cancer biology beyond its traditional function in the central nervous system. In various malignancies, including bladder and prostate cancer, MAOA expression is associated with tumor progression, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and metabolic reprogramming, particularly in fatty acid metabolism. The shRNA molecule is typically delivered via viral vectors (such as lentivirus) or specialized nanoparticle systems. Once inside the cell, it is processed by the Dicer enzyme into small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that direct the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to degrade MAOA mRNA, thereby reducing protein levels and inhibiting downstream oncogenic signaling pathways.
