monoammonium glycyrrhizinate + cysteine + sodium chloride is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product primarily used in China for the treatment of liver diseases and the prevention of perioperative liver injury. The formulation combines monoammonium glycyrrhizinate, a salt of the licorice-derived saponin glycyrrhizic acid, with the amino acid L-cysteine in an isotonic sodium chloride solution. Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate exerts hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the enzyme 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD), which prevents the breakdown of cortisol, and by antagonizing High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) protein, a key mediator of inflammation. L-cysteine serves as a critical precursor for the synthesis of glutathione (GSH), thereby enhancing the liver's antioxidant capacity and mitigating oxidative stress. This combination is frequently administered intravenously in clinical settings, such as during hepatectomy, to stabilize hepatocyte membranes and reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury, a practice extensively studied by institutions like The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
