Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Saline laxative enema, commonly known as monobasic sodium phosphate + dibasic sodium phosphate enema, is a widely used over-the-counter (OTC) rectal osmotic laxative. It is primarily indicated for the relief of occasional constipation and for bowel cleansing prior to rectal examinations, surgery, or endoscopic procedures. The formulation contains monobasic sodium phosphate and dibasic sodium phosphate as active ingredients, which work by creating an osmotic gradient in the intestinal lumen. This gradient draws water into the bowel, softening the stool and promoting rapid evacuation, typically within 1 to 5 minutes. Well-known brand equivalents include Fleet Enema and Pedia-Lax, originally developed by C.B. Fleet Company (now a subsidiary of Prestige Consumer Healthcare). Altova Healthcare also lists this product in its pipeline as a marketed generic.
