monoctanoin

Monoctanoin is a semisynthetic esterified glycerol monoglyceride, specifically glyceryl 1-caprylate, that functions as a cholesterol solvent. Developed by Ethitek Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA in 1985 under the brand name Moctanin, it was indicated for the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones retained in the common bile duct following a cholecystectomy. The drug is administered via a catheter directly into the bile duct, where it works through direct chemical dissolution of cholesterol-based stones rather than through traditional receptor-mediated pathways. Monoctanoin has since been withdrawn from the United States market.
