Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Monogen is a specialized, nutritionally complete, low-fat medical food and infant formula designed for the dietary management of conditions requiring a low intake of long-chain triglycerides (LCT) and a high intake of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). It is primarily indicated for infants and children with chylothorax, chylous ascites, or long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LCFAOD), such as very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD). The formula is engineered to provide fats primarily in the form of MCTs, which are absorbed directly into the portal circulation, thereby bypassing the lymphatic system and reducing chyle flow. This mechanism is critical for managing lymphatic leaks and preventing metabolic crises in patients with impaired long-chain fat metabolism. Monogen was originally developed by SHS International and is currently marketed by Nutricia.
