Overview

Monomethoxypolyethylene glycol-modified house dust mite extract is a chemically modified allergen preparation in which proteins from the house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) are covalently coupled to monomethoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG). This modification aims to reduce the allergenicity of the native extract while retaining its immunogenic properties for use in allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization) for patients with confirmed allergy to house dust mites. The mPEG modification reduces both immediate allergic reactions and overall clinical reactivity compared to unmodified extracts. It is administered as part of subcutaneous immunotherapy protocols for allergic asthma or rhinitis due to house dust mites[1][2][3][4]. Clinical studies have shown that while mPEG modification decreases allergenicity, it may also reduce clinical efficacy at equal doses compared with non-modified extracts[1].
