monomethyl fumarate

Monomethyl fumarate is an oral small molecule immunomodulator used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It is the pharmacologically active metabolite of dimethyl fumarate and diroximel fumarate but differs in that it does not require metabolic conversion for activity. Monomethyl fumarate acts by activating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2/NRF2) pathway, which regulates antioxidant response elements and protects against oxidative stress-induced cellular damage. The drug helps reduce MS relapse rates but does not cure the disease[1][3][9].
