Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Monoselect AKBA is a phytosome-based formulation of *Boswellia serrata* extract, specifically standardized to contain high levels of 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA). The phytosome technology involves complexing the extract with phospholipids to significantly enhance the bioavailability and intestinal absorption of the boswellic acids, which are otherwise poorly absorbed. AKBA is a potent, non-redox, non-competitive inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), the key enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. By reducing leukotriene production, Monoselect AKBA exerts significant anti-inflammatory effects. It has been clinically investigated as a complementary treatment for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) to reduce radiochemotherapy-induced peritumoral cerebral edema, potentially allowing for a reduction in corticosteroid (dexamethasone) dosage and improving patient quality of life.
