Overview

Monosialoganglioside (specifically GM1) is a glycosphingolipid biologic being investigated for its neuroprotective and neuroregenerative properties. In the context of a Phase 2 clinical trial led by Zhejiang Cancer Hospital (NCT03067753), it is being evaluated as a treatment for cerebral radiation necrosis, a serious complication following radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The drug is thought to function by limiting glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity and promoting nerve repair and regrowth. It is administered as an injection (100 mg/day) and compared against standard pulse steroid therapy (methylprednisolone/prednisolone).
