Overview

Monosialotetrahexosylganglioside, also known as GM1, is a ganglioside—a type of glycosphingolipid with one sialic acid residue—found in animal tissues and particularly abundant in the nervous system. It acts as a neurotrophic factor and is used for its neuroprotective properties. Upon administration, GM1 can prevent neurologic damage and promote regeneration of damaged neurons by enhancing neurotrophic repair mechanisms, increasing the production of neurotrophins, and augmenting neurite outgrowth[1][2]. It has been investigated for use in conditions such as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy in cancer patients, acute spinal cord injury, and other central or peripheral neurological injuries[3][5][8]. The compound is typically extracted from porcine brain tissue[3].
