Overview

This refers to the monotherapy treatment arm of a randomized controlled trial (NCT00423982) conducted by Oslo University Hospital to evaluate treatments for early staphylococcal prosthetic joint infections (PJI) following hip or knee arthroplasty. In this arm, patients received standard antimicrobial therapy without the addition of rifampin. The specific antibiotic used depended on the pathogen's sensitivity: methicillin-susceptible staphylococcal infections were treated with cloxacillin (2g IV every 6 hours for 2 weeks, followed by 1g orally every 6 hours for 4 weeks), while methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) infections were treated with vancomycin (1g IV every 12 hours for 6 weeks). Both cloxacillin, a beta-lactam, and vancomycin, a glycopeptide, function by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. The trial aimed to determine if adding rifampin improved remission rates compared to these standard monotherapies.
